The winds aloft make for challenging landing conditions even though the surface winds are calm. Lots of great lessons learned today. My instructor disagrees about using the ailerons during stalls and he knows people say you are not supposed to. He said as the plane was slipping, "don't let it get away!"

    Hey Chris, I grew up in Enterprise in the early '80's, flying RC airplanes at the Enterprise and Joseph airports. Had to leave the area in '85, but love flying home since I got my license! You should plan a visit for the Wallowa County Fly In in August! What year did your wife graduate?

      My wife graduated in 1994 from Enterprise, her family moved there in 1978. We love to visit any chance we can. Someday I hope to make the fly-in! Who knows maybe this is the year. Wallowa County is such a beautiful place and we look for every excuse to go since she know longer has family that lives there. Thanks for the comment and safe Flying HybridVW

    aren't you supposed to first follow the ABC method? Airspeed-Maintain 68 kias Best field-Look for the best field to land on before starting to maneuver Checklist-Do a flowcheck to find any errors (fuel selector off, mixture is full-lean, mags are on, circuit breakers are in) All this done before starting to maneuver towards the field. Just wondering, or is it a different method?

    • @MacfarLanden
      @MacfarLanden 5 лет назад

      You’re correct. But as you can tell he had already picked his landing spot before the power was even pulled. And don’t forget. D- declare emergency on 121.5 an squawk 7700 E- Exit preparation, Explain to passengers what will need to be done to evacuate safely.

    Although "Fly the Airplane" seems like a stupid callout, you'd be surprised how many pilots get wrapped up in other business ... not necessarily bad stuff ... but not flying the aircraft. Think about what that statement is really saying. For example, after a brief interruption of an approach briefing or landing checklist, make certain you have re-established your situational awareness, scanned the instruments, transfer control as required and get your brain ahead of the aircraft by at least a minute or so. Think about what's coming up next to do. We all get complacent and confident in our abilities and that leads to thinking we don't need to hear such things. But, to joke about the statement is not helpful and should not be endorsed, especially as PIC. As an aircrew member, educate others of the true meaning behind that statement. I'm not suggesting to get in someone's face about it, just respectfully teach them "why" the line is in the checklist. Checklists are usually written in blood or after bending or breaking airplanes. The overconfidence point often happens around the 500 hour point in a given aircraft type. That's when you start to feel comfortable and think you've seen most everything. Overconfidence sets in. So, be extra cautious at whatever hour mark you start to feel comfortable. Believe me, you haven't seen everything yet. Stay vigilant. Be safe. It's a whole lot less paperwork. (Former USAF B-52 and B-1B pilot (1980-1990's) with United Airlines since 1998.)

    How far is the rudder used to correct spins and correct certain things that happen in stalls? Trying to figure things out to get rid of these irrational fears of rudders coming off with too much pressure (I mean it did happen to an AA A330 in New York.)

    • @austinformedude
      @austinformedude 8 лет назад

      +John Armstrong . It is OK to use full rudder deflection in this case. You have to remember, speed is VERY low here compared to an A330. In fact, spin recovery procedures demand it. Procedure is: Power to idle. Ailerons neutral. FULL opposite rudder. Elevator (push) (AKA PARE)

    • @coltrogue
      @coltrogue 9 лет назад

      boomerthoreau Cutting off fuel and electronics helps mitigate the chance of a fire and is done when you get close to the ground in emergency situations.

    • @ggroombr
      @ggroombr 7 лет назад

      Just imagine... You've had an engine failure, your set up on a short final, you've got everything undercontrol and your 100% going to safely land the aircraft in a field and then all of a sudden the engine fires. You then think, I have power again, you become distracted, you try to climb out, the engines gives you a little but then it dies again. Now you've overshot your only landing area and your really low on altitude and options. Theres now close to a 100% chance you WONT be able to land safely. If you have an engine failure and you cant re-start it by 1000'AGL your then commited to the forced landing. So shutting down the engine, Electronics (after last stage of flaps is out and mayday call) and shuting off the fuel reduces the chance of distraction during the approach and fire risk in the event of a heavy landing.

    Just take a ground session with a whiteboard session, showing the wing conditions during a stall, where the disturbed airflow can be depicted over the wing during the stall, showing why it is dangerous in using the ailerons, with the disturbed air rendering them useless until you lower the nose and break the stall condition. The seeing of the condition by drawing it is an easier way to help remember why ailerons are not used during the stall process.
